IBERIACHAR

From waste to resource

Murcia's agricultural residues, turned into biochar and circular resources

Why IBERIACHAR

  • Proven biochar technology.
  • Knowledge of the local market and farming sector in the Region of Murcia.
  • Contacts across the region's institutions and technology centers.

Goals of our Murcia project

  • Turn agricultural and forestry residues into high-value biochar.
  • Seek certification of carbon removal credits with Puro.earth.
  • Generate measurable benefits for farmers and the environment.
  • Explore renewable energy generation from the heat of the process, as a possible additional source of revenue.

Incentives

The project is eligible for regional investment incentives of up to 50% of eligible costs, subject to approval. If granted, they could significantly reduce the capital required.

Infographic: about 30% of the biomass in the Region of Murcia is burned, and the majority is shredded and left in the field. Fresh wood chips and leaf debris can hold water and shelter eggs, larvae and even adults of insects that damage crops. IBERIACHAR offers a sustainable alternative: biochar and circular materials, with lower agricultural risk and healthier soil across the Region of Murcia.

Every year, pruning residues go up in smoke

In the Region of Murcia, citrus and other crop prunings are often burned in the field or left behind. Burning takes labor, requires permits, carries fire risk and faces growing restrictions. Besides being costly for the farmer, it produces poor air quality and pollution for the region.

From residue to resource in four steps

  1. Collection

IBERIACHAR will have the option of drop-off or collection of biomass for the production of biochar.

  2. Pyrolysis

IBERIACHAR will use patented specialized kilns that heat the biomass in an oxygen-free environment and produce biochar, syngas and heat.

Process diagram: agricultural and forestry residues go into a kiln designed to heat biomass in an oxygen-free environment. The kiln produces two primary outputs: biochar (solid) and syngas (gas).
  1. Biochar and materials

The biochar is designed for water filtration, for circular materials such as cement, ceramics and compost, and for regenerative agriculture.

  2. Measurement and credits

This process will independently identify and measure the carbon stored while certifying carbon removal with Puro.earth.

How the technology works

Four lines of value

  • Biochar for water filtration

Biochar designed for industrial, wastewater, stormwater and municipal filtration.

  • Circular materials

Additives for cement, ceramics, compost and regenerative agriculture.

  • Carbon removal credits

Biochar stores carbon in a stable form. IBERIACHAR will certify its carbon credits with Puro.earth, which has its own methodology for biochar.

  • Distributed renewable energy

Goal: to explore renewable energy generation from the heat of the process.
